Cargo Screening

Why is this important and why does my crate need to be screened?
As mandated by Congress and carried out by the TSA, beginning on August 1, 2010, 100% of all cargo that will ride on a passenger aircraft must be screened before being loaded onto that aircraft.

How will this affect crated artwork traveling by passenger airplane?
It means if your crate has not been screened by a Certified Cargo Screening Facility (CCSF) prior to arriving at the airport, it will be subjected to ETD (Explosive Trace Detection), X-Ray and/or Physical Search screening at the airport which will include opening the crate and removing all contents including cavity packed pieces.

How will screening prior to the airport delivery help me?
TSA anticipates significant delays at the airport for cargo waiting to be screened. Screened cargo will avoid this back-up and "go to the head of the line".

Can Artex screen my crates before they are delivered to the airport?
Yes. We can screen your packed crates before they are taken to the airport.

Is ARTEX certified to perform physical screening?
Yes. We participate in the TSA Certified Cargo Screening Program (CCSP). We perform physical screening in our facilities located in Boston, New York City, Washington, DC and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. All of these locations have been certified by the TSA.

Can institutions become a certified facility and screen their own cargo?
Yes. ARTEX can assist you with all four levels of training and certification involved in the CCSP Program.

  1. ARTEX can train, test and apply for STA (Security Threat Assessment) Numbers for your staff. This step is a prerequisite for all additional training.
  2. ARTEX can provide physical screening training for your staff that will be performing the actual screening.
  3. Each certified facility is required to have an on site trained Site Security Coordinator. ARTEX can provide the proper training for the designated individual.
  4. Each certified facility is required to implement and maintain physical access controls, personnel security, procedural security, physical security, information technology security and facility validation. ARTEX can assist in preparing your facility for TSA inspection.
