Barbara A. Ramsay, Director of Conservation Services and Chief Painting Conservator

Barbara A. Ramsay manages the ARTEX Conservation Laboratory and directs the work of four staff conservators plus that of subcontracted conservators who are hired for specific projects.

  • Master of Art Conservation (M.A.C.) Degree from Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada (1976)
  • Over 30 years of specialized experience in painting conservation and conservation management
  • Board Certified as a Professional Conservator (Easel Paintings and Wall Paintings) by the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators (CAPC)
  • Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC)
  • Fellow of the International Institute for Conservation (IIC)
  • Member of the Washington Conservation Guild and the Canadian Association for Conservation (CAC)
  • Former Senior Conservator of Fine Art in the Restoration & Conservation Laboratory of the National Gallery of Canada (NGC), Ottawa
  • Painting Conservator at the NGC for 18 years, treating Canadian, American, and European paintings from the 16th through 20th centuries
  • Manager, NGC Sculpture & Decorative Arts Laboratory for more than 5 years
  • Experience as Loans Coordinator, Exhibition Project Manager, and Head of Traveling Exhibitions at the NGC
  • Associate Professor of Painting Conservation at Queen’s University during 1983-84 and 1996-97.
  • Past President of the IIC−Canadian Group and Past-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators
  • Director of Ramsay Conservation Services, Ottawa, Canada, before moving to ARTEX in 1999
PETER R. NELSEN, Senior Conservator
  • Undergraduate and Masters Degrees from the Columbian College of Art and Sciences of the George Washington University
  • More than 25 years of experience in treating paintings
  • Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation
  • Member (and Past Director) of the Washington Conservation Guild
  • Has provided consultation, conducted condition surveys, and treated works for many private and public collections in the United States
  • Has worked on both antique and modern/contemporary paintings from the diverse cultures of Russia, East and South Asia, Africa, and Western Europe, as well as America
  • Has worked extensively as a visiting conservator in major museums in Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD since 1983, including the museums and galleries of the Smithsonian Institution and the Walters Museum of Art
  • Senior Conservator in the ARTEX Conservation Laboratory since 2001
PAMELA BETTS, Conservator
  • Graduated from the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation, specializing in painting conservation in 2000
  • Internships and fellowships in painting conservation at the National Gallery of Art, the Williamstown Art Conservation Center, the Straus Center for Conservation, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Worcester Art Museum
  • Member of American Institute for Conservation, the International Institute for Conservation, and the Washington Conservation Guild
  • Conservator in the ARTEX Conservation Laboratory since 2005
KRISTEN LOUDERMILK, Assistant Conservator
  • Graduated from Queen�s University, Kingston, Canada, in 2005 with a Master of Art Conservation Degree (Paintings)
  • Completed a one-year internship in painting conservation at the National Gallery of Art in 2005-6
  • Worked as a summer intern at ARTEX in 2004
  • Member of the American Institute for Conservation
  • Joined the ARTEX Conservation Laboratory in 2006
